📍 Location: Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden

🎉 Opening Ceremony: 11:00 – 12:00 PM
🎨 Live Thangka Painting Demonstration: 12:00 – 12:30 PM — presented publicly in Canada for the first time

About the Exhibition

This month-long exhibition (October 16 – November 15, 2025) will feature over fifty Thangka masterpieces created by emerging Tibetan artists of the Rangbala Intangible Cultural Heritage Association.

The works depict timeless Buddhist themes such as the Jataka tales, Bodhisattvas, the Sixteen Arhats, and Tibetan medicine. For the first time in Canada, visitors will also have the rare opportunity to observe live Thangka painting every day, offering a direct window into the living transmission of this sacred art.

Why It Matters

The Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden is more than a sanctuary for Buddhist practice. It is envisioned as a living heritage site, a cultural bridge, and an engine of community vitality. Rooted in ancient traditions yet engaged with Canadian society today, the Garden enriches our region in many ways:

  • Religious & Spiritual Life: A sacred home for Chinese, Tibetan, Theravāda, and multicultural Buddhist communities, while fostering interfaith dialogue with Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Indigenous, and other traditions.
  • Cultural & Artistic Diversity: Preserving Buddhist art and architecture while presenting exhibitions, music, and performances that strengthen Canada’s cultural mosaic.
  • Education & Academic Partnerships: Home to the Buddhist College of Canada and partner to Trent University, University of Toronto, and others — attracting students, scholars, and artists.
  • Tourism & Economic Development: A landmark comparable to Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, drawing visitors and supporting local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
  • Community & Social Impact: A gathering place for multicultural festivals, meditation programs, school tours, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Attracting New Residents: Many Buddhist devotees are choosing to settle in the region, purchasing homes and contributing to local life — strengthening the tax base, supporting services, and enriching community vitality.

About the Artists

The featured artists come from Rangtang County (Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China). Their journey to preserve Thangka traditions while building new livelihoods has been documented in award-winning films such as Homeland of Thangka Painters (NHK, 2021), which received international acclaim.
